5+ Audiobooks to Listen to When You Have a Migraine I’ve never been an audiobook person. When I read, I prefer reading with my eyes, and if I want something to listen to while driving or performing other tasks, I always rely on podcasts. But a recent killer migraine led me to finally discover a circumstance in which audiobooks could be the perfect thing to turn to. Migraines can be very different for different people, and likewise, the way we deal with them can also vary greatly. For me, they are completely incapacitating, and all I can do is lie down in a dark room until it’s over. Silence, though, is really unpleasant when your brain is trying to kill you from the inside, so I always need something to listen to as a calming distraction. My migraines usually last at least four hours, which means I need something that long enough so I’m not left miserably scrambling for something else to turn on. I can’t rely on music to not contain the types of sounds that trigger more pain and discomfort, and my most recent experience revealed that having a long queue of random podcasts can also lead to this same problem. This is where audiobooks come in. They’re very much longform, so there’s hardly any risk of running out of stuff to listen to. And it’s often just one person reading, which means less danger of unpleasant sound variation. I decided to browse through the audio versions of books I’ve read before as well as some of those in my TBR, and searched for titles that followed a couple simple criteria. First, a soothing voice, and second, subject matter that is not too complicated as to require one’s full attention just to follow along. Based on my search, here is a small selection of titles that I plan to have queued up  for the next time a nasty migraine hits. All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot, narrated by Christopher Timothy This was the first thing I looked up, not just because I loved James Herriot as a kid, but  because I also remembered one of my former roommates telling me she would listen to this regularly to fall asleep at night. And lo and behold, it fit my criteria just right! Christopher Timothy’s low, gravelly voice (the British accent doesn’t hurt either) paired with Herriot’s heartwarming account of his experiences as a veterinarian visiting the people and animals of the idyllic English countryside make for a perfect migraine fix. Lab Girl written and narrated by Hope Jahren Memoir is the main genre I began to explore in my search for good audiobooks for migraines because it’s pretty much just a much longer version of the types of podcasts I like to listen to in these situations. One person being themselves and telling their own story, without any weird dramatization  or acting (like using different voices for character dialogue). I found that Hope Jahren’s voice is calm, steady, and extremely pleasant to listen to, and since this bestseller has been on my TBR for the past year, it’s getting a fast track into my listening queue. The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith, narrated by Lisette Lecat I’ve been reading this series since I was in middle school and each new installment is like coming back to a place that’s familiar and nostalgic, even though the story is set across the world from me. The series follows Precious Ramotswe, a smart and cheerful woman in Botswana who starts her own detective agency. Although it can be classified as a mystery, the books are completely charming and light-hearted, and with the relaxing tempo of Lisette Lecat’s narration, it would be a lovely migraine-day companion. Milk and Honey written and narrated by Rupi Kaur Since it’s a poetry collection, Milk and Honey only comes out to be just over an hour long in audio format, but Rupi Kaur’s voice was too wonderful to ignore. She reads each line with intent and lingers on the end of each word, creating a purposeful but soft rhythm that is absolutely beautiful and lulling. Maybe I’ll just have to find out a way to put audiobooks on repeat so I can get her for the full four hours. Me Talk Pretty One Day written and narrated by David Sedaris David Sedaris  is the author I automatically turn to for laughs or if I need cheering up, so my favorite of his essay collections is the perfect way to cap off this list. His blunt humor never fails to make me smile (or laugh out loud in public, no shame), and his matter-of-fact delivery makes for a tone of voice that’s easy on my ears. Whatever the hell you want When it comes to surviving migraines, we all have our own strategies and preferences. I cannot guarantee that what I have listed above will be completely compatible to you and your migraines, but hopefully, they’re a good place to start. She dropped to her knees on a thick, soft blue rug. Bonnie made a spectacular leap and just for a moment Elena could feel a smal soapy, sudsy body in her arms. He has said that when he was going through school, he enjoyed competing andkeeping up with his white counterparts, but he now realizes that many times in the policeacademy black students use affirmative action as a crutch. Black students have been found toscore lower on tests than white students. Harmon believes that this is because they do notthink that they have to work as hard which produces less qualified black officers. (qtd. in Brimelow) With neither conservatives nor liberalsmaking affirmative action a big deal, a classic spiral of silence has occurred whereby peopleassume that their doubts are not shared and suppress them, thus mutually intimidating eachother. People are left feeling that nobody will help them. Another problem with this is themale psychology that real men dont cry. Many men would rather put up with the hurt than toeven tell their friends and relatives. (Brimelow 76)Most people realize that quotas do hurt people, but what most people do not realize is thatquotas are illegal. The 1964 and 1991 Civil Rights Acts explicitly banned government imposedquotas, but nevertheless, they immediately spread though the economy. Even though quotas arebecoming more and more popular, there is i ncredible denial. Some say that affirmative action,while a regulatory burden, is not massive in scale. Supporters of affirmative action insistthat the 1991 Civil Rights Act did not impose quotas, although its key point was to override aSupreme Court decision and make work force racial imbalance prima facie evidence of employerdiscrimination. (Spencer and Brimelow n. pag.)California Democratic Representative Don Edwards, who is a mouthpiece of the civil rightsestablishment, claimed on the New York Times opinion page that quotas did not exist. This wassaid within three weeks of Supreme Court rulings about them. As much as people deny quotas anddeny widespread affirmative action, the facts remain that it is still there and still harmful. Another way that quotas and affirmative action are very harmful is that they are veryexpensive. In 1991, the direct and indirect cost of quotas, of imposing them and complying withthem, amounted to between 112 and 115 billion dollars. The opportunity cost, which is whatthe economy might have achieved without the misallocative affect of quotas, amounted to atleast 4% of the 1991 Gross National Product, an amount equal to the amount spent on publicschools. (Spencer and Brimelow n. pag.) The revelation of these figures is needed to show thedangers of a politically motivated employment policy. Affirmative action hurts everyonewhite males, their wives, their families, the protectedclasses, and every other American citizen by hurting the economy. Affirmative action needs tobe done away with, so we can return America to the great country that she once was. People oncecame to America to be free to work hard to become qualified for a job. Many nurses choose to specialize once within the field of nursing. One specialized field that nurses can go into is nurse anesthesia. As anesthesia specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists administer more than 65% of the twenty-six million anesthetics given to patients each year. They have licensed and certified registered nurse anesthetists in all fifty states. To become a nurse anesthetist, it is necessary to first become a registered nurse. There are four ways to become a registered nurse. It is possible through a two-year community college, earning an associates degree in nursing, or through a three-year hospital based nursing school, earning a diploma. Other possible ways include a four-year university program, resulting in a Bachelors of Science degree in nursing, or the B. S. N. , as it is commonly called. For those who have a bachelors degree in another subject, there is a generic masters degree in nursing, a two or a three-year program beyond the bachelors degree. In the future, the B. S. N. is being considered the minimum qualification for a satisfying career. The two-year associates degree and the hospital-based diploma programs are rapidly closing around the country, and student nurses are being encouraged to enroll in four-year universities. Nursing education includes classroom instruction and supervised clinical experience in hospitals and other health facilities. Students take courses in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, psychology, and other behavioral sciences, and nursing. Corse work also includes liberal arts classes. Hospital departments provide supervised clinical experience in pediatrics, psychiatry, maternity, and surgery. Several programs include clinical experience in nursing homes, public health departments, home health agencies, and ambulatory clinics. The nurse anesthetist is an essential part of the surgical team. They are highly skilled and highly educated specialists who, under the direction of a physician, administer anesthetics to patients for all types of surgery. The nurse anesthetist prepares for a medical procedure by setting up assigned operating rooms with necessary equipment and supplies, meeting with assigned patients, and by completing necessary preoperative procedures. Preoperative procedures may include administering medication, hooking up the patients IV, and connecting the patient to a life support system. When the patient goes into the operating room for their surgery, the CRNA administers either a general or local anesthetic to the patient. They also practice in the obstetrics department, with psychiatric patients, in the respiratory therapy department, the emergency room and in dental offices. Attention to vital signs and changes in the patients condition is one important function of the nurse anesthetist. This is a field in which the nurse-patient relationship is critically important. The CRNA has to apply physiologic and psychologic principles with sensitivity while also employing technical skills and theoretical knowledge. The nurse anesthesia programs range from twenty-four to thirty-six months in length and encompass an academic and clinical practicum on a college degree level. The classroom curriculum emphasizes anatomy, physiology, pathophysilolgy, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, and pharmacology as they relate to anesthesia. All programs must offer a Master of Science degree or higher beginning in 1998. All programs require a four-year college degree in science or nursing, and at least one year of acute car nursing experience before entry. Schools usually define acute care as intensive care, coronary care, and emergency/trauma care. Once a student has completed their educational work, the nurse is eligible to take a national certification examination and become a certified registered nurse anesthetist. Laws also require continuing education every two years for recertification. Nurse Anesthetists work with physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals in well-lighted, air-conditioned, and surgically clean surroundings. They wear a surgical gown, cap, and mask while administering the anesthetics. Nurse anesthetists may need to lift, move, and position patients receiving anesthetics. While they are administering the anesthetic, they may stand or sit in one position for long durations of time. Certified registered nurse anesthetists are very much in demand and have many opportunities throughout the united states. The demand will continue to be excellent through the year 2010. This occupation is one of a group of registered nurses estimated to grow more than 33 percent. The Difference Between Avere and Tenere Learning a new language is not only tough because there are thousands of new words to learn, but even tougher because those words often overlap in meaning. This is definitely the case with the two verbs in Italian - â€Å"tenere - to hold, to keep† and â€Å"avere - to have, to obtain, to hold†. What are the main differences? First, tenere is often understood as to keep or to hold, like to keep a window open, keep a secret or hold a baby. Avere is to understood as meaning, to have, in the sense of possession, like age, fear, or an iPhone. Second, tenere is used, more often in the south, particularly in Naples, in the place of avere, but grammatically, its incorrect. Meaning, even if you hear Tengo 27 anni or Tengo fame, its not grammatically correct. Here are some situations where choosing between avere and tenere might be tricky. Physical Possession 1.) To have/keep an item Ho una mela, ma voglio mangiare un’arancia. - I have an apple, but I want to eat an orange.Non ho una borsa che si abbina a/con questo vestito. - I don’t have a purse that matches this dress.Ho il nuovo iPhone. - I have a new iPhone. To not have any money Non ho una lira. - I dont have any money. Here, you can use tenere, but avere is still preferred. Non tengo una lira. - I dont have any money. Non avere/tenere una lira is an expression that literally means, I dont have one lira. To Maintain a Situation 1.) Keep/have a secret È un segreto che tengo per Silvia, quindi non posso dirtelo. - Its a secret that Im keeping for Silvia, so I cant tell it to you. However, if you have a secret and youre not keeping a secret for anybody, you can just use avere. Ho un segreto. Ho un amante! - I have a secret. I have a lover! 2.) Have/keep in pockets Ha le mani in tasca. - He has his hands in his pockets. In this situation, both avere and tenere can be used. Tiene le mani in tasca. - He has (keeps) his hands in his pockets. 3.) Have/keep In mind Ti spiegherà ² quello che ho in mente. - Ill explain to you what I have in mind. In this context, avere and tenere can both be used although the sentence structure will change. Tieni in mente quello che ti ho detto ieri. – Keep in mind what I told you yesterday. To Hold Something 1.) Hold/have a baby in your arms Tiene in braccio un bimbo. Il bebà © ha sei mesi. - She is holding a baby in her arm. The baby is six months. In this situation, you can use avere interchangeably. Ha in braccio un bimbo. Il bebà © ha sei mesi. - She is holding a baby in her arm. The baby is six months. 2.) Have a bouquet of flowers Perchà © hai un mazzo di fiori? Hai molti spasimanti? - Why do you have a bouquet of flowers? Do you have a lot of admirers?Non posso rispondere perchà ¨ ho un mazzo di fiori in mano. - I can’t answer the phone because I’m holding a bouquet of flowers. Then, the person youre talking to might respond to you using the verb tenere. Rispondi, che te lo tengo io. - Answer, and I’ll hold it for you. 3.) Hold a bouquet with style La sposa tiene il bouquet con classe. - The bride holds the bouquet in her hands with style. In the example above, tenere is used to stress the way she holds the bouquet. To help make this easier, use tenere whenever you have something that youre physically holding in mano - in your hands or in braccio - in your arms. It can also be used in figurative expressions, as you saw tenere in mente, but since we would be likely to translate that as keep in mind, its easier to distinguish from avere. Avere, on the other hand, is used to talk about something you possess, either literally or figuratively. By contrast, I felt Kafka’s letter to his father was a work of considerably less quality because of its reduction in universal experience and sometimes confusing use of rhetoric. It is hard to blame Kafka for this failing as he wasn’t necessarily writing for the public but was instead making a bid for his father’s approval and understanding. The ideas contained within this work were not as accessible to the general public, some needing a bit of background information on the author in order to understand, and these ideas were continually being apologized for, which detracted from the piece to a great degree

Digital Divide Essay

The term digital divide emerged in the mid-1990’s to describe the gap that exists between individuals who have access to technology and those that do not have access (Eamon, 2004). Computer technology has transformed modern society in profound ways (Behrman & Shields, 2000). Everyday society exposes citizens to technology in some form. Citizens integrate technology into common tasks such as signing into work, paying bills, shopping, paying taxes, and even reading the local newspaper (Behrman & Shields, 2000). The increasing integration of technology into society cause school systems to be more resolute about including technology in every classroom. School leaders generally agree that access to technology prepares students to succeed in the 21st century (Bell, Judge, & Puckett, 2006). Other researchers point out that increasing access to technology in the classroom environment does not ensure academic improvement. These researchers point out that there are limits to the advantages that technology offers. A meta-analysis by Crismann, Badgert and Lucking (1997) involving 27 studies concerning academic achievement of students who received traditional classroom instruction or traditional classroom instruction with technology integration showed interesting results. On average, students receiving technology infused instruction attained higher academic achievement than 58. 2 percent of those in traditional classrooms (Page, 2002). The digital divide addresses societal differences that correlate to the educational outcomes of students. Such differences raised concerns about the emergence of the digital divide between the children on one side who are benefiting from technology and the children on the other side who the lack of technology access leaves behind (Becker, 2000). Multimedia – interactive text, images, sounds, and color 8. Network – two or more computers that are connected so users can share files and devices 9. Online – a computer communicating with another computer 10. World Wide Web (www) – a graphical Internet tool that provides access to homepages created by individuals, businesses, and other organizations Statement of Hypothesis Researchers define the digital divide as discrepancies in technology use and access in learning environments based on ethnicity and socioeconomic status (Pearson & Swain, 2002). School systems and government programs supply technology equipment and software to United States’ schools in effort to close the digital divide. Nearly every school is now equipped with computers, and over two-thirds of our nation’s children have access at home (Shields & Behrman, 2000). Equal access and supply cannot close the digital divide alone. Teachers need adequate training on selection of technology and integration of technology. Teachers, parents, and students must become technology literate in order to close the digital divide. Review of Literature Advantages of Technology and Academic Performance The digital divide influences academic performance because limited student access to technology minimizes experiences and knowledge necessary to succeed academically. Computer based technology contributes to children’s academic achievement. Researchers associate having a home computer to better academic performance (Jackson et al. , 2006). Schools play a critical role in providing access to computers to students who do not have home computers. Teachers can have a profound effect on the digital divide by carefully examining how and when technology use is necessary. Regular use of technology in the classroom directly contributes to student achievement, both by making students more effective in their learning and teachers more efficient in their teaching. Teacher education should not focus on technology alone, but on its alignment with the curriculum. In order for this alignment with the curriculum to take place, more computers must be available for students use. Technology integrated into the curriculum increases students’ time on task and extends learning into the home, beyond the traditional school day (Shield & Behrman, 2000). Classrooms benefit from the advantages of technology if planning is efficient and effective for a particular group of students. Students must understand that the use of technology within lessons supports productivity. Technology is a tool that students use for learning, research, networking, collaboration, telecommunications, and problem solving. Technology lessons must be meaningful and engaging for students to improve academic performance. Teachers are able to shift student learning from memorizing answers to questions to knowing how to find answers. Activities that encourage students to use technology outside of the classroom such as using the technology lab, school media center, or local public library prepare students for future educational experiences. Using technology for academic tasks plays a positive role in student achievement (Wenglinsky, 2005). If students participate in authentic technology enhanced activities on a regular basis, these activities will offer students the support they need to become learners that are more proficient and possibly narrow the divide. Limitations of Technology and Academic Performance The level and quality of the student interactions with technology can limit the academic advantages that technology offers. Students must be able to use computers for more than web-surfing, chatting, game playing, and participating in low-level thinking activities. Student interactions with computers must be quality interactions that allow students to do research and create original multimedia products. Although 99% of public classrooms have access to computers, many students are not meeting the technology standards set by the National Educational Technology Standards (Morgan & VanLengen, 2005). While technology exposes students to activities that allow them to use higher order thinking and problem solving techniques, they still prefer to engage in non-academic activities on the Internet. Becker (2000) states that â€Å"most student Internet activities were recreational in nature – such as email, chat rooms, web-based games, web surfing, and listening to music†. Many children’s activities on the Internet appear to be for entertainment purposes instead of educational purposes. While the Internet gives students access to an array of educational tools, it also gives them access to non-academic material. Teachers often have trouble monitoring student use of appropriate websites, electronic mail messages, instant messages, and live chat rooms. Without careful observation, students can easily use school time to access material that is inappropriate for children and will not improve academic improvement. Even if teachers properly monitor students, they may not benefit from having access to computers in the classroom. Research by Lilia C. DiBello (2005) states that many teachers have not been properly trained to integrate technology in the classroom. While teachers may be comfortable with navigating various types of software, they often have trouble implementing the technology to meet technology standards (DiBello, 2005). Teacher preparation programs now require future teachers to take a technology course as a graduation requirement. However, technology is rapidly changing and school systems offer few opportunities that allow teachers to keep up with the changes modern technology brings. When teachers are not willing and not prepared to integrate technology into their classrooms, they often fail to prepare students to perform authentic tasks using the computers. Teachers often use computers for low-level thinking activities such as drill and practice (Pearson & Swain, 2002). According to Pearson and Swain (2002), students in high-poverty schools use computers for drill and practice 35% of the time, as opposed to students in low-poverty schools, who used computers for drill and practice 26% of the time. Schools who are below the poverty line are also more often to use computers for remedial purposes instead of higher order thinking skills. Teachers rarely teach students to use the computers to answers questions that they ask, research topics, or to prepare multimedia projects that coincide with the subjects they have learned in the classroom. Importance of Closing the Divide The digital divide exists both quantitatively and qualitatively. Gillan (2003) supported that quantitative gaps exist in schools and families where there is not enough access or time spent with technology. Qualitative gaps refer to selection of appropriate applications and quality training. Many studies have drawn the conclusion that the key factor in closing the digital divide may not be access alone. As years have passed, attention moved away from who is connected to the question of who is served. It is important to consider that the upper-to-middle classes are given high-quality access to technology because technologists are hard at work creating â€Å"solutions† designed just for them. According to Morgan and VanLengen (2005), most affluent students use software that requires the use of critical thinking skill. Less affluent students predominately use drill and practice software. Many school officials feel that technologists ignore solutions for the poor. The result is often that schools give the poor low-quality access that could actually hurt them and, in some sense, widen the divide. Because of the continued influences of technology on society, the United States must address the digital divide and implement strategies to narrow the gap. It is imperative to focus on what can be done if needs cannot be met. Students that are technology savvy have significant advantages over their peers. Students with limited technology skills will not have the same educational or job opportunities and information that will be necessary for full and knowledgeable participation in society. Leaders should not subject students to the wrong side of the digital divide just because computer access at home is limited or none. It is the responsibility of the schools and communities to help narrow the gap. The schools are the primary source of computer access. Schools can promote digital equity for young children by including access to computer resources used in developmentally appropriate ways (Judge, 2005). The digital divide has consequences that extend beyond the school. If the digital divide was only a matter of unequal access to equipment, closing it would simply involve duplicating the resources of wealthy schools in poorer schools (Riel, Schwartz, & Hitt, 2002). Educators need to learn the basics of information literacy: searching, evaluating materials for quality, risk assessment, and equally important privacy protection. These skills go beyond online behavior to include mass media and everyday communications. Conclusion It is the job of educators to plan technology-integrated lessons that are appropriate for the particular group they are teaching. Educators must have knowledge and skills to integrate technology into meaningful activities of interest and relevance to children. Educators need to be aware of the advantages and the limitations of technology for all students. The primary key to closing the digital divide is investment in literacy and education. The biggest barrier to use of digital technology is lack of skills. It is possible that the next generation of the World Wide Web, referred to as Internet, emphasizes the need to go beyond text to give users a sensory experience of the web. Some governments are exploring the use of cell phones, and applications like voice recognition technology or use of visual icons on various devices. The implications for closing the digital divide are important to society. Closing the digital divide will offer educational advantages, future employment and earning opportunities, chance for social and civic involvement, equity, and civil rights for all.
